About Medium

Medium is one of the world's most influential writing platforms, connecting millions of readers with ideas that matter. We're a small, dedicated team that cares deeply about craft, curiosity, and building something that lasts. We make decisions efficiently and iterate fast, think carefully, and take the work seriously - without taking ourselves too seriously.

About the Role

The last three years at Medium were about getting operationally fit. We did that. Now we're focused on what's next: new product bets, new surfaces, and the engineering foundation to support them and we need a Senior Engineering Manager to help lead that chapter.

In an era of AI-generated everything, Medium's bet is on the opposite: empowering real people to say something worth saying to other real people. That's the mission you'll be helping bring to life. This is an opportunity for a product-minded engineering leader who loves consumer products and cares about craft. You'll own the core Medium experience including the reading experience, the editor, navigation, and the product surfaces that define what it means to be a reader or writer on Medium. We operate with a ship-incrementally, learn-fast mentality: running experiments, reading the data, and adjusting quickly. Because we don't have a dedicated PM function, engineering leaders here can have an outsized impact on product direction for their teams.

Leading a team of senior and staff engineers, you’ll oversee the core Medium product experience, foster the long-term health and growth of your team, elevate best practices across the engineering organization, and partner with leaders and cross-functional stakeholders across the company to bring Medium’s product vision to life for millions of readers and writers around the world.

Key Responsibilities

Drive scope, impact, and strategic alignment

Shepherd multi-quarter plans that align technical work with organizational goals and product strategy, while holding teams accountable for high-quality outcomes end-to-end

Operate as a key cross-functional voice in prioritization, product strategy, and technical direction to turn high-level strategy into clear direction engineers can act on

Build and sustain great teams

Own your team's hiring strategy end-to-end: attract great engineers across a broad range of backgrounds, represent Medium's mission and culture throughout the process, and think about long-term team composition

Create an environment of genuine psychological safety where dissenting opinions are valued and people can do their best work

Attend Medium’s twice-yearly, in-person offsites to collaborate with the team (hosted in locations around the U.S.)

Guide technical excellence

Lead complex tradeoff conversations and decisions, such as velocity vs. tech debt, innovation vs. operational burden, and ambition vs. resourcing constraints, while always staying grounded in impact

Guide the adoption of AI best practices and fluency while ensuring engineers remain accountable for code clarity, correctness, and the ability to reason about their systems

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

You're product-minded at your core with experience shipping high-quality user-facing products at scale. You understand your users deeply and you care about the craft of building experiences that people actually love. You think in systems and give deep consideration to things like team structure, how work is planned, and how culture is built and reinforced. Most importantly, you focus on outcomes over output.

As an organizational engineering leader, you’ll need robust product and technical judgement to assess whether your teams are building the right thing, the right way, for the humans who depend on it. You should be experienced leading through people and systems, even if you aren’t expected to be hands-on in the code.

Additionally:

You're a builder of inclusive, high-trust team cultures where people feel supported and challenged in equal measure

You have demonstrated experience leading product engineering teams with broad scope and end-user impact

You have strong product instincts and know which levers to pull to drive meaningful results, and you understand the cross-functional implications of your team's work

You love crafting high quality user-facing products, and ideally have experience with consumer product, a social platform, or SaaS subscription business at scale

You have a genuine point of view on responsible AI use in engineering, and you can articulate where it creates leverage and where accountability must stay human

You communicate with honesty and directness, and you build trust through consistent follow-through

Nice to Haves

Experience using AI to improve a team’s leverage, reach, output and impact

A passion for online writing, publishing, or long-form content

Experience with A/B testing, experimentation frameworks, or data-informed product development

Comfort operating without a dedicated PM layer, you've owned product direction, not just execution

You personally use Medium and are genuinely excited to contribute to its mission: empowering humans to write meaningfully for other humans

Why Medium

We're a small team doing meaningful work. Beyond guiding your team's execution, you'll have real influence over engineering strategy, culture, and direction. You'll work alongside people who are genuinely good at what they do and who care about building something worth building.

At Medium, inclusion, diversity, and equity are core to how we work and what we build. We believe a more inclusive team creates a better product—one that’s intuitive, thoughtful, and serves a wide range of users. We strive to foster a supportive, fun, and challenging environment where people from all backgrounds can thrive.

We welcome applicants from all walks of life and strongly encourage those from historically underrepresented groups to apply. Our hiring process is built to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for everyone. Even if your experience doesn’t match every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you—your perspective and passion matter more than checking every box.

Learn more about our mission, operating principles, and culture:

Yes to a diverse community

Be part of a better internet

Medium Rules

Operating Principles

Read about our story here.

Benefits

In addition to the new skills you'll pick up, here's what else you'll enjoy by working at Medium:

Working with a fully distributed team: We’re fully remote and have teammates across the U.S. & France.

Healthcare benefits covered at 100% for employees and 70% for dependents.

Generous parental leave policy.

Mental health support through Talkspace.

Financial wellness support through Northstar.

Stipends for co-working, professional development, wifi, and a one-time home office bonus.

Unlimited PTO and standard company holidays.

A discounted Medium membership!

Please note: We’ve been made aware that our job postings may appear on third-party sites that are not affiliated with our company.
