Overview

The Basecamp Program Manager provides dynamic leadership and proactive consultation in responding to the programmatic needs of the Tewa Roots Society therapeutic adventure and youth prevention programs. This position is responsible for the safety, quality, and effectiveness of all of Tewa Roots Society’s outdoor education and youth prevention programs. This role involves both administrative work at the Tewa Roots Society Basecamp facility in the Pueblo of Nambe, and field work when required. This position reports directly to Tewa Roots Society’s Deputy Director and works closely with the Executive Director, Clinical Director, Cultural Advocate and TRS Administrative Division and as part of the Tewa Roots Society Leadership Team.

Tewa Roots Society leaders are held to a high standard. They are expected to set a positive example in speech and conduct in and out of the workplace and help to build and uphold Tewa Roots Society’s values and culture of agin (respect), maatuui’in (kinship) and ayingidi (responsibility/safety/awareness). They should aim to foster a positive work environment and help enable their staff and peers to carry out Tewa Roots Society’s mission and vision within the community.

This position may require evenings and occasional weekend events. A valid New Mexico Driver’s License and ability to be insured by Nambé Insurance Carrier is mandatory.

Essential Job Functions

The Basecamp Program Manager coordinates matters related to tribal, federal, and state agencies that issue grants, land use permits, industry accreditations, credentials and training, partnerships, community relations, program growth and development, staff mentoring, skill building and management, equipment, and program logistics.

Specific job functions include:

  • Program Leadership and Administration:
  • Oversee the GUIDE Youth Prevention Program internal communication, design, planning, organization, and implementation with the end goal of addressing age-appropriate health issues of 11-17 year old Native youth, including, but not limited to: mental health, suicide prevention, bullying prevention, healthy relationships, and peer support, college and trade school preparation.
  • Oversee quality assurance in regards to both outdoor education and Youth Prevention programs.
  • Ensure culture, language and tradition are woven into programming.
  • Build rapport with staff members, registered teens, parents, and Nambe Pueblo leadership and community as appropriate.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about program goals, expectations, calendars, upcoming events, etc., as needed.
  • Direct and oversee program quality assurance, standards, schedule and expectations, ensuring compliance with accreditation, credentials- and partnership-related standards and regulations.
  • Maintain youth/client confidentiality and program/participant documents and records, including confidential documentation.
  • Coordinate ongoing youth and community feedback and implement strategies and program ideas based on youth and community needs/feedback.
  • Cultivate welcoming, inclusive, safe, clean and accessible facility to increase youth participation in GUIDE (11-17) prevention program and Tewa Seeds Youth Council (13-17)
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Pueblo of Nambé.
  • Curriculum and Logistics:
  • Develop course outlines, curriculum, itineraries, and schedules for outdoor education and experiential programs and youth programs.
  • Ensure standards for culturally relevant experiential education and youth prevention programming.
  • Create and oversee the outdoor activity check-off system for outdoor activities (hiking, fishing, kayaking, snowshoeing, snowboarding, etc.).
  • Acquire permits and maintain land use documentation.
  • Staff Management and Development:
  • Recruit, interview, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate experiential educators (Basecamp Coordinators, Native Youth Coordinators, and seasonal support staff).
  • Provide ongoing, consistent supervision and coaching to all supervised staff (Native Youth and Basecamp Program Coordinators).
  • Oversee staff schedules, responsibilities, conflicts, concerns, and accountability.
  • Policy and Procedures:
  • Enforce and refine program policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Leadership Team in revising/updating and enforcing program policies and procedures in alignment with organizational values.
  • Propose updates/revisions to standard operating procedures.
  • Oversee Basecamp programmatic logistical procedures
  • Schedule and facilitate staff meetings.
  • Collaboration and Outreach:
  • Regularly meet with Tewa Roots Society Leadership Team and assist with the development and implementation of Tewa Roots Society's long-range goals and objectives.
  • Maintain relationships and collaborate with existing external partners and other Nambé Pueblo departments/initiatives, mainly Nambe Pueblo Education Department.
  • Outreach to potential partners and contractors that could add value to programming.
  • Work with Outreach and Admin Support Manager on the creation of all program outreach and marketing material.
  • Work with Admin Manager on purchasing in alignment with Nambe Pueblo policies and procedures
  • Work with Cultural Advocate and Language and Culture Committee on cultural based programming implementation
  • Work with Clinical Director on planning and incorporating therapy-based programming and collaboration with clinical staff as a whole.
  • Equipment and Inventory:
  • Work with Facilities and Fleet Coordinator to maintain equipment and inventories and program records.
  • Ensure that all equipment is maintained in a serviceable condition.
  • Instruction and Facilitation:
  • Train and facilitate outdoor education courses based on Tewa Roots Society curriculum.
  • Update curriculum as program evolves in alignment with Association for Experiential Education guidelines
  • Demonstrated competency and skills in group/program facilitation.
  • Oversee and required training schedule for Basecamp staff (CPR, WFA, Swiftwater, Youth Mental Health First Aid, Trauma Informed Care, etc)

The Basecamp Program Manager is an organized and innovative problem solver who can consider all possibilities when managing challenging situations and scenarios. This position also understands and respects the need to help create and maintain written procedures and protocols within Tewa Roots Society and will ask for help whenever the need should arise.

The required attributes of the Basecamp Program Manager position include someone who:

  • Demonstrates success with multitasking and working as an integral part of a high-functioning team responsible for the care and safety of others.
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills, supervision, and procedure training/demonstration skills.
  • Is proficient in basic computer operation using both Apple/Mac and PC computers, including but not limited to navigating the Internet; using programs like Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Suite; and is proficient in corresponding via email and text.

Minimum Qualifications and Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 4+ years experience in mental health or youth prevention field required
  • Bachelor’s degree (or progress towards a degree) in Outdoor Education, Outdoor Recreation, Education, or related behavioral/mental health field preferred.
  • Four or more years experience working in experiential education, wilderness programming, outdoor education, youth prevention/intervention, or related field mental/behavioral health required
  • Four or more years experience working in a leadership/supervisory role of a team of 3 or more is required
  • Prior experience working with Indigenous people/tribal communities.
  • Demonstrated competency and skills in wilderness risk management is required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills, public presentation skills, and the ability to train/demonstrate technical outdoor skills to others is required.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required.
  • Current WFA (Wilderness First Aid) and CPR certifications are required (willingness to obtain immediately after hiring is acceptable).
  • Satisfactory completion of Tewa Roots Society’s Therapeutic Adventure Program check off system is required, as is current knowledge and passion for experiential education programs, curriculum, and operating philosophy.
  • Language fluency: English is required, Tewa language learner/speaker preferred

Physical Requirements

The Basecamp Program Manager will frequently be required to stand seven to 10 hours per day and will regularly be required to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs. for distances of up to five (5) miles. Extensive use of a computer keyboard and the telephone is also required, as is walking and hiking several miles per day in rugged, remote terrain while wearing a backpack. The ability to perform job duties indoors and outside in all types of weather conditions is also required.

Tewa Roots Society works from a framework of Tewa and Indigenous values and teachings that guide us in our daily work in our clinical behavioral health, outdoor behavioral health and experiential education, and teen empowerment programs.

Our Basecamp Therapeutic Adventure Program utilizes an experiential education framework for therapeutic adventure programming. These therapeutic effects are also imperative to our suicide and substance use prevention programming because they help empower and build the resilience of our clients and teach them new skills to navigate the complex challenges that exist in our communities.
